The Healthcare Stimulus What does it mean to me?
By now everybody knows that physicians will be reimbursed for acquiring and using EHRs in their practice. Each physician may qualify for up to $45,000 in stimulus money starting in 2011.
So what should you do? Should you go out and purchase an expensive EHR tomorrow? Have you noticed how most EHRs now have price tags of $44,999.95? Interesting.....

Well, the first thing any physician should do is figure out if he/she is ready to switch from paper to electronic charting. If the answer is yes, then try to make a list of what you expect an EHR to do for you in order to make you more efficient in providing optimal care to your patients and still make it home in time to have dinner with the kids.

Shop around like you would for a car. This is an important decision and not easily reversed. Not all EHRs are created equal and the most expensive one is not necessarily the best one; it's just the biggest one (like a Hummer).
Most likely you would want a web based EHR since all the buzz in Washington is about "interoperability" and easily communicating with other systems. This will more than likely be a requirement for the incentives.
Look for software that is simple and easy to use. Loss of productivity while fighting with a complicated product will cost you more than all the incentives put together.
If all this seems daunting and you would like more advice and maybe some help, call us!
Yes, we do sell EHRs, but we value partnerships with physicians more than we value licenses and we'll be glad to help you make the right choice for your practice, even if it means staying on paper for a bit longer...

How to get, and keep your stimulus money?
We believe that physicians should be able to keep the stimulus money instead of spending all of it in advance on expensive and complicated software.
The government is proposing to pay incentives for "meaningful use" of an EHR. "We believe that the incentives should serve as compensation for the time spent by already overburdened physicians and clinical staff in meaningfully using an EHR, be it data collection, quality reporting, CPOE or e-Prescribing.
